Can churches apply for federal grants?
Yes. Faith-based organizations can apply for most federal grant programs, including FEMA disaster relief, HHS social services, HUD housing programs, and DOL employment programs. The funded activities must serve the community regardless of religious affiliation, and federal funds cannot be used for worship, religious instruction, or proselytization.
Do faith-based organizations need 501(c)(3) status for grants?
Most federal and foundation grants require 501(c)(3) status. Churches are automatically considered tax-exempt under IRC 501(c)(3) but may need to provide their EIN and documentation. Some programs accept fiscal sponsorship through a qualifying organization.
What are the rules about religious activities and federal grants?
Federal funds cannot be used for worship, religious instruction, or proselytization. Funded programs must serve all eligible people regardless of religion. Organizations can maintain their religious character and may require staff to adhere to religious tenets. Religious activities can continue but must be funded separately and offered voluntarily.
