The purpose of this Agreement is to provide Federal financial assistance for the funding of a fellowship program through the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology which enables competitively selected scientist and engineers to learn first-hand about the use of science and technology in federal government decision making, policies and programs while offering valuable contributions of their knowledge and analytical skills to federal agencies. The Agreement will connect science with National Park Service policy and foster a network of science and engineering leaders who understand the National Park Service and policymaking, and are prepared to develop and execute solutions to address societal challenges.

The objective of this Agreement is to promote hiking, foot trails and their surrounding natural areas as an inspiration for the general public to get outdoors, volunteer and protect trails. As the national voice for hikers, American Hiking Society will work with the National Park Service to promote hiking, build a nationwide constituency of hikers and trail stewards, form strategic alliances with national, regional and local partners and advocate for hikers. Sustainable hiking trails and trail systems will bring people together, connect them with our natural and cultural heritage, promote healthy lifestyles and serve an integral role in conservation.

The objective of this Agreement is to expand the capacity of the National Park Service to conduct and cooperate on high quality ecological restoration, and to share information about those efforts with park visitors. Work will include cooperative development of science-informed approaches to restoration, professional development opportunities for NPS staff engaging in ecological restoration, and the inclusion of NPS projects and staff into the broader ecological restoration practitioner and research community.

Golden Field Office

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) intends to issue, on behalf of the Solar Energy Technology Office, a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) entitled Solar Desalination . This FOA supports research, development, and potential demonstration of early stage technologies that can significantly reduce the costs of desalination powered by solar thermal energy. Rather than utilizing high-value electricity as an energy input, solar thermal desalination can achieve lower costs than current reverse osmosis systems by lowering the cost of collecting and storing solar thermal energy and increasing the efficiency of thermal desalination technologies. Additionally, thermal desalination can be utilized over a wide range of salt content, making it attractive for applications that require very high salinity feedwater or zero-liquid discharge. Applicants will be expected to propose ideas that have the potential to dramatically decrease the cost of producing solar thermal energy, advance early-stage thermal desalination technologies, or design novel integrated systems that creatively use solar thermal energy to lower the cost of producing fresh water. It is anticipated that the FOA may include the following Areas of Interest: Area of Interest 1 Low cost solar thermal heat - innovative concepts that have the potential to lower the cost of solar thermal collection, transport, and storage below conventional methods of generating heat. Area of Interest 2 Innovative thermal desalination techniques - Novel, early-stage thermal desalination technologies that are well suited to be coupled with solar generated heat. Area of Interest 3 Solar thermal integrated desalination - Integrated solar thermal desalination systems showing the potential for low-cost desalinated water. Area of Interest 4 Solar thermal desalination analysis - Analytic tools, such as systems models, for economic evaluation and resource optimization with solar thermal desalination. iVamos Verde! A Latino Youth Urban Conservation Coalition

The objective of this agreement is to identify Japanese American youth as among the next generation of conservation stewards by connecting them to a NPS historic sites that has significance to Japanese Americans and Japanese American history. The program aims to address the search for personal identity experienced by many young Japanese Americans who seek greater affirmation and understanding about their historical and cultural experience. The program will encourage participants to consider careers in public service, preservation, and historical fields. Through these activities participants will have a chance to physically identify with the incarceration experience will provide opportunities to understand the historic origins of the Japanese American community, as well as its continued vibrancy and current initiatives. Educational sessions prior to and throughout the program will explore and analyze the causes for the internment as well as its racial, political, and civil rights implications and its continued impact on the Japanese American community; and it will emphasize the ways in which the legacy of the incarceration remains relevant in the current age.
