Purpose. Mechanism of Support. This funding opportunity will utilize the NIH R01 mechanism, and runs in parallel with two other FOAs of identical scientific scope (R21, PA-07-273 and R03, PA-07-274) that solicit applications under the NIH Exploratory/Developmental grant mechanism (R21), and the NIH Small Research Grant (R03) mechanism, respectively. The R03 is intended to support small research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. The R03 is not renewable. Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. The total amount awarded and the number of awards will depend upon the mechanism numbers, quality, duration, and costs of the applications received. Budget and Project Period: Budgets for direct costs of up to $50,000 per year and a project duration of up to two years may be requested for a maximum of $100,000 direct costs over a two-year project period. USMA executes research to enhance the education of cadets, develop the faculty professionally, and address important issues facing the Army and the Nation. At West Point, research is organized and administered through centers and institutes, most of which reside within academic departments. Somali Independent Business Alliance

The Somali Independent Business Alliance (SIBA) is launching a project to empower Somali small businesses citywide. The project will involve a comprehensive one-on-one survey and a subsequent workshop to identify and address the unique needs and challenges of this community. The survey will collect data on operational challenges, resource gaps, community impact, and future aspirations of 20-25 Somali small businesses. At the end we will hold a workshop that will provide valuable information and guidance on topics such as financial resources, marketing strategies, and legal assistance. This workshop will also provide a platform for businesses to network and collaborate. SIBA aims to empower small business and thus lead to economic growth through this project. Giving businesses knowledge to find the right resources will enhance decision-making and economic performance. This will in turn benefit the entire city.

Walk The Block is a free-of-cost & publicly accessible annual outdoor festival that transforms Central District homes, businesses, parks, porches, and other common spaces into art installations and performance sites for everyone in the community to enjoy. Walk the Block is a chance to experience a slice of African American culture that defined the Central District as the hub for Black life in Washington State for over 70 years. Walk the Block draws art lovers from across the region and inspires residents of the Central District to see their neighborhood as a creative, transformative place. On September 28, we will activate the Central District by engaging 3,500 attendees who will experience the work of 100+ Black and Indigenous artists via a series of more than 25 art installations, and more than 40 live performances. Literacy Source will work with Hunger Intervention Program (HIP), Akin Family, and North Helpline to create this event. We will have food catered by small businesses in the area, local dancers who will showcase dances from various cultures, and resource booths. The World Dance Party will be a multicultural, multigenerational environment that is free of charge. This event will bring the community together by sharing the diversity of cultures, languages, and experiences within the community. Between a multitude of cultures, ages, and socioeconomic backgrounds, people of shared and different identities can create meaningful connections and access essential resources.
