Villa Comunitaria

De Corazón program,(Spanish for From the Heart), is a community-based Spanish language Heartsaver CPR train-the-trainer program. Promotoras Comunitaria is a program located in South Seattle to address the disparity experienced by the Latinx community in CPR intervention due to linguistic and cultural barriers. In 2019 we will provide the De Corazón Spanish language CPR training to at least 45 low-income Seattle residents free of cost in South Park during two training sessions in the Fall and Winter. The first training will be on November 23, 2019 from 1-5 p.m. located at 8201 10th Avenue South. The Promotoras will also participate in community activities to raise awareness about heart health, CPR, and to promote the three upcoming opportunities to get trained in CPR in Spanish. This project will be completed by January 2020.

West Seattle Community Orchestras

We will provide free concerts for the West Seattle community in December 2024. The first concert will be held on December 9, 2024 at 6pm at Chief Sealth High School located at 2600 SW Thistle St, Seattle, WA 98126. This program promotes the arts in our community through supporting children's musical education as well as local artists conducting the ensembles.

Delridge Grocery Cooperative

The Delridge Grocery Coop (DGC) is in the planning & feasibility stage of opening a grocery coop in Delridge. This project will complete a market study to ascertain if there is a suitable market to sustain a grocery coop and to study if our business plan is viable for opening of the store.

Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association

The Delridge Neighborhods Development Association (DNDA) will along with several community partners, organize and facilitate the Delridge Neighborhoods Let's Talk Race Series. This project will produce eight events in 2017 -2018 using film, dialogue, restorative justice, and storytelling. These events are intended to transform the narrative around institutional and historic racism and build stronger relationships between community organizations, individuals and groups within Delridge and beyond.

Friends of the Delridge Triangle

The Friends of the Delridge Triangle will hire a Landscape Architect to create a conceptual redesign for the Delridge Triangle based on community input. The property is located at 9200 Delridge Way SW. Public input meetings and the design work will take place between fall 2018 and spring 2019.

Tasveer

Desi Girls Comedy Project will be a four-week virtual workshop series with one session per week + one-on-one mentoring to nurture participants' confidence and skills, culminating in a live comedy showcase presented within COVID-19 health guidelines. Virtual workshops and events, spearheaded by the queer South Asian comedy troupe Kutti Gang and including local guest artists from Seattle, will focus first on serving South Asian women in Seattle and will be available for free online. This project will be completed by December of 2021

Tasveer

The Desi Improv Festival will include an improv workshop and a main improv event. The project is designed to introduce participants to the art of improvisation through engaging scenes, games and exercises in a fun, supportive environment. Research shows that improv is a powerful tool for team building and community engagement. By focusing on collaboration, creativity and spontaneous thinking, this workshop aims to break down communication barriers and foster acceptance and understanding. Participants will develop skills in adaptability, active listening and effective communication. Ultimately, this workshop will empower participants to feel more confident, connected, and better equipped to navigate diverse environments.

Tasveer

Tasveer will organize a free nine-day literary and storytelling festival focusing on South Asian culture in January 2019. It will feature presentations and workshops on writing fiction, comedy, screenplays, graphic novels, and other ways of telling a story. The events will take place at Seattle Art Museum Located at 1300 1st Ave and Northwest Film Forum located at 1515 12th Ave.

Friends of Detective Cookie Chess Park

This project is to plan and design an outdoor chess park, and multi-functional community space. The space would honor the work and influence of Dectective Denis `Cookie` Bouldin's decade-old chess club an its positive impact on the youth of South Seattle.

The Friends of Detective Cookie Chess Club and the Rainier Beach community will continue their work with a landscape architect to develop a site survey and 30% Street Improvement Permit (SIP) construction drawings for the 'Chess Park' located at 9100 Rainier Ave South. The work is scheduled to be completed in early 2018.

Friends of Detective Cookie Chess Park

The Friends of Detective Cookie Chess Club will continue working with a landscape architect, and civil engineer to develop the 60% Street Improvement Permit (SIP) construction drawings to submit to SDOT by late Spring 2019. This phase includes the permit review by SDOT. The resulting, permitted drawings will then be ready for the next phase of construction, separate from this proposal.

Friends of Detective Cookie Chess Park

The Friends of Detective Cookie Chess Park is planning Phase 4 of the project. The Detective Cookie Chess Park located at 9100 Rainer Ave S envisions a inter-generational, multicultural community space where neighbors can gather and play chess while honoring Detective Cookie, a local policewoman, who started a youth Chess Club over 12 years ago in Rainier Beach. Phase 4 will focus on initial construction of the park beginning with demo, grading and drainage, and utilities. This project is expected to be completed in the late Fall of 2021.

Healthy Othello Safer Through Environmental Design (HOSTED)

Healthy Othello Safer Through Environmental Design (HOSTED) would like to make improvements in the right of way located at 3900 South Othello Street to improve everyone's safety. The project will include installing planters with colorful plants selected and maintained by the community to separate the vehicle space from pedestrian space, painting the pavement/obstructions to help pedestrians of all abilities move through safely. The project is expected to be done by September of 2020.

Dia de Los Muertos PNW

Día de Los Muertos PNW will host Ballard’s first Día de Los Muertos Parade & Festival. Located at 2200 block of Ballard Avenue NW - from NW 17th Avenue to NW Market Street . A family friendly event that celebrates tradition, memory, and community. The evening parade starting at 5:30pm will feature Catrinas, Mariachis, Charros, Native American groups, youth, floats, and other community groups, followed with live Latino music, cultural installations. The project highlights Latino culture, fosters inclusivity, and strengthens neighborhood connection through art, music, food, and remembrance. The event is free and open to the public.

Cultivate South Park

Dia de los Muertos: Day of the Dead, Season of Life celebrates the joyful spirit of everlasting life. We honor the abundance of Harvest Time and the seasonal thinning of the veil, allowing greater connection with deceased loved ones. This year, we want Dia de los Muertos to commemorate our loved ones who have passed with a symbolic cemetery. Too many in our community have witnessed loved ones who died from COVID, war or gun violence without a funeral or burial. We wish to honor all those who passed in such a way, and recognize all our ancestors who are no longer with us in body, but present in spirit and within our hearts.

Dia de Muertos Committee

The Dia the Muertos committee will be hosting the The Dia de Muertos celebration at Seattle Center on October 30-31, 2021 located at 305 Harrison St. This celebration is part of Festal Cultural Festivals and brings to life the vibrant Mexican tradition remembering and honoring our departed ones through colorful art, history, musical performances, and cultural activities that transport spectators and participants to different regions of Mexico. The is to connect Mexican and Latinx communities to their heritage and share these rich traditions with the broader community. The theme this year is the fall of the Aztec Empire at the hands of the Spanish forces in August of 1521. The event is free and open to public.

Multimedia Resources and Training Institute (MMRTI)

MMRTI's Digital Storytelling in the Time of COVID-19 (DSTC-19) project will engage eight youth interns and a variety of professional instructors to capture and document the local COVID-19 pandemic experience in the form of a one-hour documentary featuring stories from local underserved and underrepresented communities in the African American, Asian American and East African immigrant and refugee community. In addition, we will broaden the conversation through facilitated panel discussions where community members will be able to share their own stories and make connections with one another. The project will be completed by June of 2022.

Discovery Park Educational Partnership

The Discovery Park Educational Partnership will holistically present information about the rich history of Discovery Park by conducting a feasibility study and testing operations of 1-2 kiosks in the Daybreak Star Center and/or the Environmental Learning Center at Discovery Park. This project will be completed by May 31, 2019.

Discover Music in the Park

Friends of Discover Music in the Park will organize a free outdoor classical music and dance concert in Discovery Park. The event will be held on Sunday, August 20, from 1:00 to 3:00pm, at the upper field next to Daybreak Star Cultural Center, and is planned for around 500 attendees. Outreach will be done to the general public with focus on the Magnolia and Queen Anne neighborhoods, families, students, Tent City 5, Discovery Park visitors, community groups, and arts organizations that are interested in expanding music and arts performances in Seattle's parks.

Friends of Discovery Park

The Friends of Discovery Park will develop two alternatives of trail design and viewpoints for the South Beach Trail based on meetings with, Seattle Parks and Recreation and the public. The trail is periodically closed due to steep slopes and erosion. New trail design is needed to increase safety and keep the trail open. This project will be completed by May 31, 2019.

Discovery Park 50th Anniversary Partners

Discovery Park will celebrate its 50th birthday on October 1! Volunteers are planning a series of events that focus on the park's stewardship, education, and history. All of these events will culminate in a daylong celebration held at the park, located at 3801 Discovery Park Blvd Seattle WA on October 1, 2022.

Ase Theatre

Our community centers on Black folks of Seattle, connected through the historically Black Central District, a neighborhood of deep significance, even as many have been gentrified out but remain tied to it. In February and March 2025, our Dispersed project will host a workshop series where community members will become performers, guided by teaching artists. By exploring themes of Black identity and storytelling, we will foster discussions about personal and collective experiences, amplifying the stories of Black folks in Seattle as a community and place. The production is a community-driven process, where the audience actively participates. Opening night will feature a community celebration with story circles, and all performances will be free and open to the public. The play serves as a catalyst for community connection through dialogue, promoting healing and unity. It is a community event, created by, for, and within our community.

Licton Springs Community Council

We are a broad coalition of community members in Seattle's District 5 who are planning a series of three election forums to connect community members with candidates running for Seattle City Council District 5. These forums are planned for: Haller Lake (13055 1st Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98125) - Monday, June 5th - 7-8:30 PM Lake City (Location being finalized) - Tuesday, June 20, 2023 - 7-8:30 PM Zoom - Wednesday, July 12, 2023 - 7-8:30 PM We are focused on community building and education and do not and will not endorse or promote any specific candidate or candidates. Every eligible candidate will be invited to the forums. We expect to record all forums and make them widely available to community members who are not able to attend the live events. We would like to provide translation and interpretation services and security for the forums. The purpose of this grant application is to request funding for both. We hosted similar community-based election forums events in 2015 and 2019.

Simposio de Muujeres Latinas

The 6th Simposio De Mujeres Latinas (Latina Symposium) will be held on Saturday May 18th from 10:00am-4:00pm on the campus of North Seattle Community College, 9600 College Way North. The theme for this year is Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Strengthening Ourselves Through Our Differences. There will be panel discussions, a keynote speaker and the announcement of Estela Ortega as the winner of the 2019 Manor Unidas Award.
