About This Grant
PROJECT SUMMARY This proposal requests funds to support the acquisition of a VS200 Slide Scanner equipped with automatic loader and structured illumination from Evident Scientific (formerly Olympus). The proposed instrument will be housed within the Integrated Microscopy and Imaging Laboratory (IMIL) at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center, College of Medicine. The mission of this Core Facility is to provide both cutting-edge imaging technologies and the necessary technical assistance to support research progress and grant development by encouraging researchers to explore advanced imaging modalities and to incorporate them into their research programs. Slide scanning microscopes are essential tools for automated high-throughput imaging and analysis offering the advantage of imaging larger tissue areas to gather more comprehensive data and freeing up researchers' time through automation. While researchers at Texas A&M University have access to several imaging cores across campus, the existing slide scanners, including the Evident Scientific (formerly Olympus) VS120 housed by IMIL, are becoming outdated. In addition, Evident Scientific has announced that they will not be offering service contracts for the VS120 slide scanners after September 2026. Thus, the IMIL cannot rely upon these older instruments to maintain their availability and anticipate that they will become subject to extended downtimes. Demand for slide scanner imaging at the IMIL is expected to extend beyond current capacity to accommodate the imaging needs for the users of this proposal and other NIH-funded researchers on campus. The need for this instrument is demonstrated in this proposal with several NIH-supported projects in different research areas including neurobiology, liver disease, tissue regeneration, cancer, lymphatic and cardiovascular disease. Thus, seven NIH-funded projects are described that require the use of near confocal z-resolution optical sectioning provided by the structured illumination to distinguish fine sample features to allow discrete quantification. All nine NIH-funded projects described here require increased speed of acquisition using the automatic loader for large samples provided by the VS200 slide scanner. Since IMIL opening six years ago, it has become an integral part of the College of Medicine and Texas A&M campus currently supporting over 52 funded research projects. This new technology is an important investment in scientific infrastructure, enabling the university to further strengthen the critical support for NIH-funded projects, and enhance the researchers’ roles as leaders in biomedical and life sciences research, contributing to breakthroughs that improve health outcomes at the state, national, and global levels.
