Advanced Statistical Methods for Microbiome Data Analysis
About This Grant
Project Summary The human microbiome, often termed our second genome, plays an important role in the onset and progression of numerous complex diseases. More importantly, microbial communities are modifiable, offering a promising avenue for advancing precision in disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Large consortium-based microbiome studies have emerged, aiming to achieve more powerful, generalizable discoveries and mechanistic insights at unprecedented scale. However, methodological challenges arising from the unique features of microbiome data, such as compositionality, high variability, and extensive heterogeneity, significantly hinder reproducibility and impede clinical translation. This project addresses methodological gaps by developing innovative batch-effect correction methods, meta-analysis techniques, and robust causal-inference tools. We will also provide user-friendly open-source software to disseminate our new methods and maximize their impact. Our long-term goal is to improve the efficiency and reliability of microbiome discovery, thereby deepening our understanding of its role in complex disease and accelerating the development of microbiome-based precision medicine strategies for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
