About This Grant
Abstract Advances in genomic technologies have transformed the practice of cancer care, including risk management, precision prevention, and targeted treatment. These innovations are driving an increased demand for genetic cancer risk assessment (GCRA) services. However, the dearth of healthcare providers with adequate knowledge and skills in GCRA is a continuing barrier to bringing genomically-informed cancer risk management and treatment to scale. Since 2001, City of Hope's Intensive Course in Clinical Cancer Genomics and its Clinical Cancer Genomics Community of Practice (CCGCoP) have addressed this gap through a hybrid interprofessional course model that combines distance didactic learning, case-based webinars, and in-person workshops. The Intensive Course is internationally recognized as a standard-bearer in GCRA professional education. Despite progressive evolution of the course design to increase capacity, the current cohort-based model cannot meet the ever-increasing demand for healthcare providers seeking knowledge and proficiency in cancer genomics. The goal of this proposal is to leverage the resources and experiences from conducting the Intensive Course to develop and pilot an innovative self-directed course delivery model. The project aims are to: 1) Apply theoretically grounded instructional design methods to convert selected core recorded didactic modules from the established Intensive Course curriculum and create a self-directed eLearning course bundle, and 2) Conduct a two-group pilot study to evaluate the effectiveness of the redesigned eLearning modules compared with the current didactic course modules covering the same content. Upon completion of the proposed activities and demonstrated success of the eLearning bundle, the redesigned eLearning modules will be disseminated as a self-directed Fundamentals of Genetic Cancer Risk Assessment eLearning mini-course. This model will also provide a framework for converting the remaining course curriculum into a flexible, scalable new version of the entire Intensive Course. By integrating self-directed eLearning with the highly valued continuous learning, networking, and support features of the CCGCoP, this innovative delivery model will expand access to cancer genomics training for providers practicing in areas where GCRA services are needed. Additionally, it will serve as a replicable model for other cancer education programs, helping to support access to genomically-informed cancer care across the U.S. and globally.
