About This Grant

ABSTRACT This application requests R13 conference support from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) to support trainee engagement in the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) X-Nuclei Workshop 2026, “Beyond Protons: Challenges & Advances in X-Nuclei MR.” NIBIB R13 conference support would substantially lower the registration fee for trainees to encourage attendance, which is essential to sustaining this field of imaging science. The ISMRM X-Nuclei Study Group is organizing this workshop to advance research in MR spectroscopy and imaging methods beyond protons. X-Nuclei MRS/MRI detects nuclei other than 1H, including sodium 23Na, phosphorus 31P, deuterium 2H, fluorine ¹⁹F, oxygen ¹⁷O, carbon 13C, potassium ³⁹K, and lithium ⁷Li. Unlike traditional MRI, which images abundant protons in water, X-nuclei have lower natural abundance and weaker resonance signals. Despite these challenges, X-nuclei imaging offers unique opportunities for noninvasive molecular imaging with higher specificity to biological processes relevant to cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological conditions, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Technology development for X-nuclei MRS/MRI is an active area of imaging science, spanning technologies for acquisition, reconstruction, analysis, and application. The workshop will provide a forum for education, scientific exchange, and collaboration among imaging scientists. The event will be widely advertised through the ISMRM community to maximize participation and impact. Abstract submissions will be peer-reviewed, with high-quality work invited for oral or poster presentations. The workshop is designed to provide trainees with unparalleled exposure to leaders in the field, opportunities to present their research, and structured networking that cannot be replicated in virtual formats.
